Birds of Barbados is a social media initiative that aims to raise awareness and educate people about the beautiful birds of Barbados, both native and migratory, where and how to see them, the challenges they face, and the efforts to protect them.
Hey, Im a 14 year old birder from Scotland and my family is taking me on 3 week holiday to Barbados in a few weeks and I hope to see some new birds there. I will be situated on the East Coast near Holetown and the Folkestone Marine Reserve and Im wondering what birds can be seen around this area and if there are any other sites not too far away. Thanks and your blog has been an invaluable resource :) Glen
Hi Glen, I am happy to hear that my blog was of some help to you. You said that you were staying near to Holetown and Folkestone Marine Park? That is on the West Cost of the island and it’s a good location to start birding from. You will have no problem finding our only endemic bird speice, The Barbados Bullfinch; you would also see a number of our most common birds around that location. At Folkestone you could look out for Golden Warblers and Caribbean Elaenias. In Holetown you can find an Egret rookery. If you travel north to North Point you look out for Caribbean Martins and a number of shorebirds on the beaches. Other locations you can check out are The Graeme Hall Swamp, and Inch Marlow Beach. I hope you enjoy your stay on our beautiful island. If you have any other question please feel free to contact me. To find a birdpal check out this link. Thank Glen and enjoy your birding.
Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. Two more questions! When is 'the Hutt' at the WSR open and would visitors, like me, be able to access the Conga Road Swamp and if so would you be kind enough to share its whereabouts and how to access? Thanks again Glen
