Green Heron Feeding

Green Heron(Butorides virescens)
Herons and Egrets are truly amazing when it comes to eating. They can swallow food many times wider than their narrow necks. This I knew, but now have a better appreciation, after seeing a Green Heron(Butorides virescens) at Codrington Collage St. John attempting to swallow a large Tilapia. After a number of failed attempts at getting the fish down its throat he finally was able to do so.   It took the Heron more than five minutes to completely devour his catch. The slides below show the action.
