Barbados Bullfinch (Loxigilla barbadensis)

Local Names: Sparrow or Sparky Description: 5.5-6 inches; Females, males and juveniles: Brownish-olive; wings and tail orange-brownish (tawny); sexually monochromatic unlike it Lesser Antillean relative. Habitat: Can be found island wide; around human habitation; very tame.
Statue:
Barbados first and only endemic bird; extremely common. Comment: was once considered a subspecies of the Lesser Antillean Bullfinch (Loxigilla noctis) but was elevated to the species level in 2006. This was because, unlike the Lesser Antillean Bullfinch were the male of the species is black, with the Barbados Bullfinch the males has the same plumage as the female.
