Name: American Coot (Fulica americana) (AMCO)

*Once the second of two coot species found in the Americas, the other being Caribbean Coot (Fulica caribaea).  In 2016, for scientific reasons, both species were merged into one, retaining the name called American Coot. Now the once Caribbean Coot referred to as American Coot(White Shielded) and the American Coot(red Shielded) American Coot(White Shielded)

Habitat: Waterbird, freshwater ponds,

Statue on the Island: Rare, locally recorded at Chancery Lane and Graeme Hall Swamp in Christ church; Walkers Reserve and Bawden Irrigation Ponds, St. Andrew, and a few Private Locations in St. Lucy, St. Philip, and St. George. American Coot(White Shielded) first recorded nesting on the island was July 1999 and after a break recommence in 2020. No confirmed American Coot(red Shielded) nesting.
